What to Look For When You Buy a Baby Monitor

Choosing a best baby monitor is not as easy as it used to be, and even just a decade ago, your options were pretty limited. Now there are monitors that will do just about everything short of diapering your child while you take a nap. Some people like having a lot of options, while others find having too many choices to be intimidating, and if you are someone who gets overwhelmed by having too many options available, here are some hints that you can use to help you choose which baby monitor to buy.

How big should your monitor be? Some parents want something small and non obtrusive. You may have room for a rather large machine, and might even not mind if it takes up a lot of space, as long as it transmits sounds or does what you want it to. How will you be using the monitor…will you need something that you can carry around with you…do you lose portable items easily? These are all questions to ask yourself when it is time to buy. If you will only be using the monitor in one room, then you can opt for something a little bigger and bulkier than the average monitor, but if you plan on moving both units around a lot, you’ll want something more lightweight.

How much monitoring do you want to do? There are some parents who need to be able to track every second of the time they spend apart from their infants. Others find that, if constant surveillance is available, they’ll spend all of their time sitting in front of the system watching it-which can increase their nervousness that something might go wrong. If you need the added monitoring to feel secure that your baby is okay, you’ll want to choose a system that has video feeds as well as audio feeds, as these can record and monitor your baby’s every movement and allow you to watch the feed as it is broadcast. Other parents prefer the simple, audio only based monitors that will alert them only when the baby is crying or in distress. The type features you need should be the only thing that determines this part of your decision, because it does not reflect on how good or bad of a parent you are if you choose only the audio surveillance.

What else is happening in your home that could interfere with the monitor? Do you have cordless phones…do you have cell phones…Radios, because you will want to choose a baby monitor that operates on a different frequency than the other devices in your home. If you choose something on the same frequency, you could mess up more than one of your possessions!

There are lots of ways to narrow down your choices when it comes time to choose a best baby monitor. From the size and shape of the monitor to the number of receivers to how much the system costs-it all plays a part in whether or not you will buy it. If you start shopping without thinking of what you really want or need, you could end up wasting a lot of your valuable time, just take your time and research before you start shopping.
